In Manipur, the State government has been conducting destruction drives against poppy plantations in various hill districts of the State as part of the War against Drugs.
Poppy plant is the source of narcotic drug opium and it is reported that the plantation of poppy plants are being carried out in some hill districts of Manipur in the interior jungle areas. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh led government has already deployed around 100 police personnel in every district specifically for the operation against Poppy plantations.
The State government also submitted a project costing Rs 6.8 crore to Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs for plantation and processing of lemongrass as an alternate livelihood for affected villagers who were earlier dependent for their income on poppy plantations. The concerned department has identified an area of 130 hectares of different hill districts for plantation of lemon grass and a pilot project costing of Rs 60 lakh will be started soon at two different districts. The State machinery has been holding a number of meetings with the village chiefs and other public leaders to encourage the campaign War against Drugs in Manipu
