Maharashtra CM solicits Center to disavow its request from setting a limit for buying of the onion by traders

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has requested that the Central government repudiate its request for setting a limit for purchasing of onion by the traders saying the choice has unfavorably influenced the market prompting the harvest's value rise. In a letter to Union Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal, Thackeray said taking into account the Center's request for restricting the purchasing of the yield, the onion traders in APMC have prevented purchasing onions from farmers influencing the supply chain.

He said the dealers ought to be permitted to purchase 1500 metric huge loads of the yield which is right now covered at 25 metric tons by the centre under the Essential Commodities Act. On 23 October 2020, the Union Government corrected the Control Order in the Essential Commodities Act to confine the capacity of upto 25 MT for discount onion brokers and up to 2 MT for retail onion dealers.
