India Post releases Special Postal Cover on Millets

The Department of Posts, Government of India in collaboration with the ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad released a Special Cover with the theme “Eat Millets - Stay Healthy”.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi, Director, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad emphasized on the Millets’ importance. He highlighted most of Millet Crops that are native of India and are popularly known as Nutri-cereals as they provide most of the nutrients required for normal functioning of the human body. He also accentuated on the recognition of importance of the Millets and its declaration as Nutri-cereals for production, consumption and for trade by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India.


The Chief Postmaster General, Government of India apprised the participants about the agricultural and commercial dimensions of improving the Millets production. He also highlighted that the India Post is proud to be associating in this Nutrition endeavor through the Millets.

Dr. B. Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist & CEO, Nutrihub, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad briefed the promotion and popularization of the Millets and its value-added products including capacity building on processing, production and marketing of Millet health food products and encouragement of young entrepreneurs by the Institute to flinch their Start-Ups through the Nutri-Hub - a business incubator facility of ICAR-IIMR.

Shri Rajendra Kumar, Chief Postmaster General, Telangana Circle; Colonel S.H. Singh and Shri P.V.S. Reddy, Postmasters General, Headquarters Region, Telangana Postal Circle, Hyderabad also participated in the programme.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization approved India's proposal to declare 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Emphasizing the need for including millets as preferred food by our people, the Chief Postmaster General, Telangana Postal Circle, launched the special cover in a bid to help Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR-ICAR) in promoting millets as healthy food and in achieving food security objective.
