The total estimated milk production in the country is 176.35 million tonnes during 2017-18. The National Action Plan for Dairy Development envisages milk production target of 254.55 Million Tonnes by 2022. This Department is supplementing efforts of the State Governments to develop dairy infrastructure across the country by providing financial support through Dairy Development Schemes namely, National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme, National Dairy Plan-I, Supporting Dairy Cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organizations engaged in dairy activities and Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF) aiming at boosting up of milk production in the country.
There is provision for providing central assistance/subsidy to states varying from 25% to 100% depending on dairy components has been made under various schemes. As implementation and enforcement of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 primarily lies with State/UT Governments, Commissioners of Food Safety of States/UTs are regularly conducting surveillance and enforcement drives to curb the adulteration in milk and milk products.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been strengthening food testing infrastructure by notifying more labs on a continuous basis. FSSAI is also providing assistance to States/UTs to strengthen the State Food Testing Labs and is also providing Mobile Food Testing Labs besides spreading awareness among the consumers about food safety. The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying also supports cooperatives under National Programme for Dairy Development for purchasing equipment for milk adulteration testing.
Under dairy development programmes mainly, National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) and Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF), this Department has been assisting dairy cooperatives to strengthen and modernise milk procurement and distribution infrastructure to ensure supply of pure and nutritious milk across the country.
This information was given in a written reply by the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Sanjeev Balyan in Lok Sabha today.
