Union Government contracts additional 12,660 MT of Onions taking the total import quantity to approximately 30,000 MT
The Union Government has contracted an additional 12,660 MT of Onions which shall begin arriving in India from 27th December 2019 onwards. With this additional quantity, the total quantity of imports that have been contracted so far reaches approximately 30,000 MT. The Department of Consumer Affairs has also directed MMTC to issue fresh tenders for additional 15,000 MT of Onions (three new tenders of 5000 MT each) today.
Earlier, on 9th December 2019, the Union Government had further revised the Stockholding limits on retailers from 5 MT to 2 MT. The Stock Limitswere only revised for retailers &it was kept unchanged for wholesalers at 25 MT. Importers continue to remain exempted from these stock limits for imported onions.
The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan had also written a letter to all Chief Minister asking them to carry out immediate anti-hoarding operations to ensure the supplies in the markets are augmented and stock holding limits are strictly enforced.
