Cyclone Fani hovers 880 km from Chennai
The cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ is now located at 880 km from Chennai and India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials aren’t yet sure if it will make landfall in Odisha, according to a press statement from the Press Information Buraeau (PIB) on Monday.
They have however ruled out the cyclone descending on Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
By Tuesday, the storm is expected to graduate to a severe cyclonic storm category — the second highest in a five-step gradation of the severity of tropical cyclones. Windspeeds are expected to touch 145 kmph today, according to the IMD forecast.
Fishermen have been warned to stay away from the sea as the storm in the Bay of Bengal is expected to move in a northwest direction and then change track and take a northeastern trajectory, the press note added.
